The 12-year-old bomb sniffing dog came out of retirement again to take part in an event to honour animals who have served in combat since World War 1.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Of Animals In War\u00a0<\/em>event\u00a0at the magnificent <em><strong>Australian War Memorial<\/strong><\/em> in Canberra on February 23 was a huge success, but it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-02-23\/military-dog-sarbi-at-australian-war-memorial-commemoration\/5278164\" target=\"_blank\">Sarbi<\/a> who stole the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarbi enjoyed the attention, but in typical military style, she proudly wore her medals and lapped up the pats from the crowd with little emotion \u2013 just a look of satisfaction that she was appreciated for doing her job well,\u201d said Canberra local, <strong>Michela Laus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These gorgeous photographs of Sarbi were taken by Michela&#8217;s partner, <strong>James Goodwin<\/strong>, who attended the event with their seven-year-old Belgian Shepherd, <strong>Sheba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs animals lovers we felt it was right to honour the contribution of animals in war time and it was nice to take our own dog, Sheba, along to the service,&#8221; said James.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We live very close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awm.gov.au\/events\/animals-memorial\/\" target=\"_blank\">War Memoria<\/a>l so rather than taking a walk to the park that morning we decided to go to the ceremony. The Memorial really is a true place of reflection.\u00a0 You can\u2019t walk past the honour rolls or one of the campaign memorials in the grounds without thinking of the men, women and animals who have served the nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Michela added that they \u201cknew of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allenandunwin.com\/default.aspx?page=94&amp;book=9781742375571\" target=\"_blank\">Sarbi<\/a> and her story but hadn\u2019t had the chance of seeing her in person&#8221;. Or should that be, in <i>paw-son?<\/i><\/p>\n<p>A canine aside. Belgian Shepherds like Michela&#8217;s and James&#8217;s dog, Sheba, make great explosive detection and military guard dogs. In fact, the dog who took part in the famous raid to capture or kill terrorist <strong>Osama bin Laden<\/strong> was a Belgian Shepherd &#8211; or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgian_Shepherd_Dog_(Malinois)\" target=\"_blank\">Malinois<\/a> &#8211; named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/uk\/248044\/The-Bin-Laden-Seal-who-is-really-a-dog-of-war\" target=\"_blank\">Cairo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder the Explosives Dog Detection unit in the Australian Army have a saying, In Dogs We Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, we do.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sandralee.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Sarbi-AWM-Feb-2014-2-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1513\" src=\"https:\/\/sandralee.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Sarbi-AWM-Feb-2014-2--300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Sarbi and fellow EDDs at the AWM\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandralee.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Sarbi-AWM-Feb-2014-2--300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sandralee.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Sarbi-AWM-Feb-2014-2--1024x643.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sandralee.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Sarbi-AWM-Feb-2014-2-.jpg 1617w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How good is Explosives Detection Dog Sarbi?
